On 6 June 2024, the members of the Somnolink project, which is funded as part of the Medical Informatics Initiative, came together for the first joint meeting. The aim of the project is to use medical informatics and medical data science methods to improve the diagnosis, treatment and adherence to treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.
Obstructive sleep apnoea - OSA) is characterised by pauses in breathing during sleep and often leads to daytime sleepiness and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. In Germany, around 26 million people suffer from sleep apnoea, which makes efficient treatment methods necessary.
Since 1 March 2024, sleep physicians and medical IT specialists have been working together in Somnolink to optimise the diagnosis and treatment of OSA with the help of AI and improved health data. The project brings together nine interdisciplinary partners, including big data infrastructure providers and ethics and sustainability experts. Dagmar Krefting from the University Medical Centre Göttingen is coordinating the project together with Christoph Schöbel from the University Hospital Essen.
The meeting took place in the new data centre of partner GWDG, where the participants were given a guided tour of the possible uses of high-performance computers for Somnolink.
AI should help to better recognise OSA in women, find the appropriate therapy and support patients during treatment. To do this, the scientists need representative, interoperable and high-quality clinical data: In recent months, the project partners have already developed a core dataset and methods to make nocturnal sleep measurements available for research. The next joint meeting is planned for November at the annual conference of the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine in Essen.
