Modeling Group

Open by Design:
Together, we are shaping the digital future of healthcare

The openEHR Modeling Group within the HiGHmed Consortium stands for innovation and collaboration in healthcare, with the goal of developing high-quality, interoperable information models for the health sector. Since the beginning of modeling activities in 2016/2017—supported by the HiGHmed Consortium—a structured and collaborative approach has been established. The launch of the HiGHmed Clinical Knowledge Manager (CKM) in 2017 and the publication of an initial governance framework in 2018 laid the foundation for this work.

Modeling activities are carried out in accordance with defined processes and quality standards, involving relevant stakeholders throughout. International collaborations—such as in the field of genomics—support the continuous advancement of the modeling framework. Since then, the number of users in the HiGHmed CKM has been steadily increasing. In 2021, the technical foundation was further enhanced through the integration of a terminology server.

From a professional standpoint, the group has made successful contributions to COVID-19 data modeling, including GECCO, which was implemented in a fast-track process for the COVID-19 research data platform. It also played a key role in the

development of the new MII1 KDS2 module for microbiology, based on its openEHR modeling work. The development of use case-specific archetypes within HiGHmed and the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) continues to this day.

Based on the modeling work, several applications and openEHR-based documentation modules have been developed, including the Anamnesis App, Cardio App, and SmICS App. These applications have significantly improved the documentation and management of patient data and provide valuable support to medical professionals.

In parallel, the group provides extensive training and workshop materials—particularly within the framework of HiGHmeducation—to support education and knowledge transfer in the field of openEHR. These resources make a valuable contribution to the training and continuing education of healthcare professionals and promote the dissemination of knowledge and best practices in openEHR modeling.

With Open Models Toward Connected Healthcare

The German openEHR Modeling Group (GoEMG) is a community supported by openEHR International, dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary collaboration in the modeling of openEHR content within the German-speaking region (DACH). Its goal is to sustainably strengthen the adoption and further development of the openEHR standard.

At the core of its mission is the development and maintenance of archetypes and templates tailored to the German healthcare system. Through the active involvement of physicians, nursing professionals, and other domain experts, practice-oriented models are created that meet clinical, linguistic, and regulatory requirements.

In doing so, GoEMG makes a significant contribution to an interoperable, patient-centered digital healthcare system.
