Neurodegenerative diseases encompass a group of disorders characterized by the gradual loss of structure or function of nerve cells in the central nervous system. This loss leads to a progressive deterioration of neurological functions, resulting in a variety of symptoms and impairments, such as a decline in cognitive and motor abilities. The most well-known and common neurodegenerative diseases include Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
Through early detection and treatment of a neurodegenerative disease, its progression can be positively influenced and slowed down. How such early detection can be achieved through the use of new technologies is the subject of this episode, where Katja Weber speaks with Dr. Lara Marie Reimer. Since May 2023, Dr. Reimer has been leading the junior research group "Analysis of Mobile Data for Monitoring the Progression of Neurodegenerative Diseases" (NDEMobil). The goal of the junior research group is to investigate how data from mobile devices such as smartphones and smartwatches can be used for the early detection and monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases. She studied Information Systems at the Technical University of Munich. In her doctoral thesis titled "Physical Activity Recognition Using Mobile Devices," she was able to combine her hobby, medicine, with her profession, informatics, for the first time. In this episode, Dr. Reimer presents her current research, talks about her own path into research, and discusses the opportunities and challenges that arise at the intersection of medicine and informatics.
