Well-trained professionals are a crucial prerequisite for the success of medical informatics. To strengthen the scientific talent pipeline, a total of 21 junior research groups are currently being funded across Germany as part of the Medical Informatics Initiative. In this podcast episode, the leaders of two of these junior research groups are our guests: Dr. Zaynab Hammoud leads the junior research group "Modular Knowledge- and Data-driven Molecular Tumor Board" (MoMoTuBo) at the University of Augsburg. Luise Modersohn heads the junior research group "Clinical Text Analytics: Methods for NLP on German Texts" (De.xt) at the Klinikum rechts der Isar at the Technical University of Munich.
While Zaynab Hammoud's group focuses on optimally supporting the processes of a Molecular Tumor Board through software solutions, Luise Modersohn and her team are researching ways to make medical texts, documents, and reports “readable” for computers through automatic machine processing of natural language, also known as Natural Language Processing (NLP). In addition to the exciting specialized topics being explored in their research groups, Katja Weber also talks in this episode with Zaynab Hammoud and Luise Modersohn about why they applied to lead a junior research group, the tasks and challenges associated with this role, and how they envision their future in the field of medical informatics.
