What exactly is it about?

The Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) opens up a wide range of opportunities to improve health care for people. It is part of an increasingly digital health system that also offers citizens more and more opportunities to access digital health information and use digital health applications.

In order for people to be able to use these applications wisely and confidently, they need more than just the right technical equipment. They also need a range of skills, such as a basic understanding of digital processes and responsibilities, the ability to operate digital systems and recognize data protection issues that can arise, and an awareness of ethical, legal and social implications associated with digitalisation.

How can citizens acquire or deepen these skills? What background information do they need and how can practical application be learned? For this purpose, researchers from the Institute of Epidemiology, Social Medicine and Health Systems Research at the Hannover Medical School (MHH) have developed and already successfully implemented the course programme "KundiG - Klug und Digital durch das Gesundheitswesen". The special feature is that the programme was designed and tested in close cooperation with self-help institutions and Barmer, so the needs of people with the disease could be directly incorporated into the concept.

Who is the interview partner?

Katja Weber talks to Prof. Marie-Luise Dierks about the contents of KundiG and the reactions of the participants in the courses so far.

Prof. Dr. Marie-Luise Dierks is head of the research focus "Patient Orientation and Health Education" at the Institute for Epidemiology, Social Medicine and Health Systems Research at the MHH, as well as the Master's programme in Population Medicine and Public Health. She is also the founder of the first German Patient University.

Background:

The development of KundiG was funded by the Barmer Ersatzkasse, the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Selbsthilfe e.V., the Nationale Kontaktstelle zur Anregung und Unterstützung von Selbsthilfegruppen (NAKOS), the Selbsthilfekoordination Bayern e.V. (SeKo Bayern e.V.) and the MHH.

KundiG was recently awarded the 2nd prize of the Future Prize 2022 of the Association of Substitute Health Insurance Funds. The Future Prize recognises projects that use new ideas and creative implementation strategies to help strengthen people in their health literacy or promote their disease management.
