From AI vision to clinical reality - the final, difficult step! This year's 3rd Heidelberg Spring Symposium on Medical Informatics once again provided an impressive platform for exchange and discussion on digital innovations in healthcare.
The focus was on two key topics:
AI-supported medical information systems with Large Language Models (LLMs)
Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs)
One central theme ran through many of the contributions: How to make the leap from AI research to clinical reality?
Prof. Hans-Ulrich Prokosch put it succinctly in his keynote speech: "Many are researching the next innovation - but only a few are taking the decisive final step towards actual implementation."
For AI to noticeably improve care, it needs:
More research into clinical implementation
Clear governance models and regulations in hospitals
Chief AI Officers as a bridge between science and practice
Education and training for medical staff
Structures such as AI implementation labs to transfer pilot projects into everyday life
The discussion made it clear: there are technical possibilities - now it's a matter of implementation, collaboration and clear strategies.
A highlight in the area of PROMs: The contribution on PROMOP, which systematically combines PROMs with OMOP (Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership), was awarded the prize for the best presentation - a strong sign of the relevance of patient-centered data models in digital medicine.
Special thanks to the hosts Prof. Martin Dugas and Prof. Petra Knaup for the organization and the selection of the exciting contributions. We are looking forward to 2026!
