The HiGHmed consortium adapted its software SmICS (Smart Infection Control System) - originally developed to specifically track bacterial pathogenic outbreaks - to expose chains of infection for SARS-CoV-2.
Research teams at the Hanover Medical School, University Medicine Göttingen and Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin in cooperation with other partners tested the applicability of the software to a pandemic, such as that caused by the droplet-transmissible SARS-CoV-2 virus. The software supports clinical experts during the control of infectious events acquired within a clinic (so called nosocomial infections).
Software version 1 provides a time course of SARS-CoV-2 tests and identifies, by means of patient movement data, potential contact points of positively tested patients with other persons. Thus, chains of infection can be revealed and SARS-CoV-2 tests applied in a targeted manner to prevent nosocomial infections. SmICS is currently being upgraded by additional functions and is available for all university clinics. In future, HiGHmed also plans to provide the software for regional hospitals and other health facilities, such as homes for the elderly.
