For the third time, the Network University Medicine (NUM) brought together researchers, clinicians, and political decision-makers with the shared goal of shaping the future of a sustainable, nationwide research platform.
The first day of the event, on January 20, delivered strong momentum from both politics and science. It featured welcome addresses by Federal Minister of Education and Research Dorothee Bär and the Chairman of the Executive Board of our HIGHmed site, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Prof. Dr. Heyo K. Kroemer; a panel discussion on development partnerships between industry and academia within NUM; as well as a wide range of impressive community sessions in the afternoon.
The ceremonial highlight of the first day was the keynote address by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wick, Chairman of the German Council of Science and Humanities and Medical Director of the Department of Neurology and Outpatient Clinic at Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD). In his inspiring and compelling talk, he made it clear that strong university medicine requires attractive and sustainable framework conditions and career paths - not only in patient care, but especially in science and research.
On the second day, the focus included the NUM expert networks as well as the funded registries.
In his closing remarks, Ralf Heyder, Head of the NUM Coordination Office, drew a positive conclusion from the two days. He emphasized that the NUM Convention serves as a key platform for communicating the goals, motivation, and diverse offerings of NUM to researchers. At the same time, he highlighted the networking character of the event, which provides space for new connections, the exchange of ideas, and the joint development of approaches for future research projects.
