The new episode of the "DigitalisierungDerMedizin" podcast discusses the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) and its chances for better healthcare.
Medical data form the basis for determining a diagnosis. They are necessary to make correct treatment decisions and are at the heart of medical research. In order to make medical data more usable for precisely this purpose, medical informatics as a scientific discipline has already developed a wide range of methods and played a decisive role in shaping the digitization of medicine.
To further strengthen these fields in Germany, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research launched the MII in 2016. Through cooperation and common standards, data from clinical care and medical research is to be made usable across institutions. To this end, all German university hospitals and numerous other partner institutions are working together within the four consortia DIFUTURE, HiGHmed, miracum and SMITH. The collaboration in the MII is coordinated by the Technology and Methods Platform for Networked Medical Research e.V. (TMF).
In this episode, Katja Weber talks with Karoline Buckow and Dr. Editha Räuscher about the tasks of the TMF in the MII, what the opportunities and challenges are with regard to the cross-site use of medical data, and what advantages this brings for patients.
Who are the interviewees?
Karoline Buckow is a medical informatics scientist and has been working at TMF since 2017. In the MII, she coordinates the work of the cross-consortium working group on interoperability. In this, a common core data set was defined that describes which data sets should be kept for all inpatient patient data. This core data set ensures that medical data can be used for research across sites.
Dr. Editha Räuscher holds a PhD in pharmacy and has been working at TMF since 2018. Within the MII, she coordinates the cross-cutting use cases on drug-related problems and on rare diseases. POLAR (POLypharmacy, Drug Interactions and Risks) and CORD (Collaboration on Rare Diseases) are two use cases that all consortia are working on together. Together, Karoline Buckow and Editha Räuscher also present the Research Data Portal for Health - the platform through which researchers can request access to data.
