In January 2023, the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) entered the consolidation and extension phase to further advance digitalisation in health research. In the new funding phase, the cooperation between the university hospitals is to be expanded and extended to include new partners, especially from regional care. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the MII with around 200 million euros until 2026.

Since 2018, so-called data integration centres have been established at university medical sites nationwide. In these centres, healthcare data is to be made available for medical research in a data-protection-compliant manner. The functionality of these centres is now being tested and further developed in new clinical use cases of the MII. In future, data from health insurance companies, medical registers and the outpatient sector will be integrated into the DIZ and made available for research in addition to data from hospitals.
