Interaction of influencing factors: Using environmental, activity and health data for personalized diagnostics, therapy and risk assessment in asthma and COPD

Bronchial asthma (BA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the most common non-infectious lung diseases with a significant socio-economic impact. The main symptoms are varied and there are different individual lifestyle factors as well as external factors that can influence the course of the disease. These include sporting activity, for example, but also pollutants or pollen in the air. Although these influencing factors have been very well researched in detail, the causes and course of the disease and the response to medication and therapies are sometimes very different for each person affected. There are also differences in terms of the patient's living situation and lifestyle. In order to enable better and personalized medical care for patients in the future, the CALM-QE project (COPD and asthma: Longitudinal and cross-sectoral real-world data for machine learning application for quality improvement and knowledge acquisition) as part of the medical informatics initiative aims to gain a better understanding of the relationships between clinical pictures, therapies and influencing factors.

To this end, various data is combined, which will be jointly evaluated in the next step. In this episode, Katja Weber talks to Prof. Dr. Irina Lehmann about what other exciting data is included in addition to the classic data from outpatient healthcare, how prediction models are developed on the basis of artificial intelligence methods and why teamwork is so important here. Mrs. Lehmann is Professor of “Environmental Epigenetics and Lung Research” and heads the Molecular Epidemiology working group at Charité's Berlin Institute of Health. In addition to sub-project 4 “Integration of personal health data with environmental data for secondary prevention” of the CALM-QE project, Mrs. Lehmann also heads the clinical study for the project at the Charité in Berlin.
