A next podcast episode of the HiGHmed sponsored podcast "DigitalisierungDerMedizin" is online! This time, the HiGHmeducation podcast team focused on digital patient records and the exchange of medical data.
Digital patient files, in which examination and treatment data are stored, are distributed in many places in the health care system. In doctors' offices and hospitals, digital patient data is created, viewed and processed by employees of the respective institution. Other physicians and therapists outside the facility who are involved in the treatment process, as well as the patients themselves, do not have direct access to this patient data.
This episode of the podcast is about a special digital patient record, namely the electronic patient record (ePA). Due to current legislation, health insurance companies are required to provide an ePA to all of their legally insured patients as of January 1, 2021. With the introduction of a digital patient file that is available across practice and clinic boundaries, the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) is pursuing the goal of improving healthcare.
Podcaster Katja Weber talks to Prof. Dr. Sylvia Thun and Lena Dimde about the functions of the ePA and the special challenges in its development, e.g. with regard to data protection and interoperability, but also about other international patient file initiatives. Prof. Thun is a licensed physician, graduate engineer and professor of information and communication technology in health care at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, where she heads the eHealth Competence Center. In addition, she is Univ. Prof. (W3) at the Charité and Head of the Core Unit eHealth & Interoperability at the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH). Lena Dimde is an industrial engineer and has been product manager for the electronic patient record at gematik since 1.1.2021.
