The Medical Faculty of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität (WWU) Münster has appointed PD Dr. Julian Varghese as a tenure-track university professor. The scientist received his certificate of appointment on Dec. 21, 2020.

As of January 1, 2021, Prof. Dr. Julian Varghese has taken over as acting director of the Institute for Medical Informatics (IMI) at the WWU. The previous managing director, Prof. Dr. Martin Dugas, follows a call to the Ruprecht-Karls University in Heidelberg, where he will head the new Institute for Medical Informatics.

Julian Varghese completed his habilitation at the WWU in 2020. His studies in medicine and computer science give him a valuable double qualification. He has been a research associate at the Institute of Medical Informatics from 2013 to 2016. In 2016, he took over the leadership of the research group "Digital Health". A particular focus of his scientific activities is the development of AI (artificial intelligence) systems for the research of movement disorders (project "Smart Device System for Parkinson") as well as the development and analysis of semantic data models for medical research.

The professorship in medical informatics was created with support from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the German government's medical informatics initiative (MII). The newly created professorship will also deal with the further development and continuation of teaching concepts for the training of data scientists in medicine.

HiGHmed congratulates Julian Varghese and looks forward to future collaboration!
